10/31/2023 0 Comments Games like dominions 5![]() TL DR: I put more hours in Civ than Dominions, but if you are willing to look past unintuitive controls and somewhat obscure mechanics, you will really enjoy the excellent combat of the latter in all of its complexity.Ĭiv 5 is a classical civ, you explore land, settle cities, trade/fight against AI civs, but with Civ 5, the civ mechanics were condensed into fewer cities, fewer, but more meaningful techs (I think?) and going from stacks into one unit per tile with more tactical deterministic combat. I guess one thing to keep in mind is that Dominions is a fantasy game, while Civ features historical people, units, and ideas. The military strategy is therefore more about composition, placement, and tech rushing. In contrast, units in Civ are basically the same for all factions. Both also push you to use similar strategies when playing a specific faction, although I feel that push more strongly in Dominions, just because the unit roster of certain factions makes some builds unfeasible and others op, as each faction has totally unique units with certain strengths and weaknesses. Both games have lots of mods, custom maps, and custom factions. Dominions has a bit of an odd control scheme and can be hard to fully understand without a good tutorial, but has huge amounts of replayability. Personally I have more hours in Civ, as it was a lot more approachable imo (because I had previous experience with the series). ![]() Thanks for the help everyone.Ģ very different games. I might get Dominions 5 down the line if I'm still interested and have more free time, but for now I'll be getting Civ 5. While I don't mind learning how to play dominions, I don't think now is the best time to do that. While I find Dominions 5 to be more interesting, I think I'll enjoy Civ 5 more because of it's simplicity and better SP experience. Which one is the better option?Īfter reading all the replies and thinking it through, I think I'm gonna be going with Civ 5. I'm prefer playing with the AI in SP and don't care about MP. But I like the fact that I can make the story play out differently. I always enjoy the same playthrough, usually I choose something different if the consequences are minor, but if it has major consequences I basically always make the same choice. Unrelated to 4x, but when I play an RPG with choices and consequences, the game mostly plays out the same. For civilization 5 because there are more options to play the game other than war and I kinda like the fog of war feature if that's what it's called. I'm interested in dominions 5 because of the focus on the war aspect, the many ways to play in the war, and I've been interested in total war lately. I know that they're different types of 4x. It's daunting but I wouldn't mind learning a bit if it means I'll have more fun. I've heard that dominions 5 is more complicated and civilization 5 is more simple. I'm new to the 4x genre and I've tried civilization 3 but it didn't click for me. I've been thinking about buying 1 of those 2 games but I'm having a hard time choosing. Created by /u/Kryogenetics, it's a collage of some of the 4X genre's greatest games: Endless Legend, Civilization, Endless Space and Galactic Civilizations. ![]()
